Fall TV: What Looks Good

Apple Cider and Remote Control

Hot Apple Cider and the Remote - Fall Essentials!

I love the fall. Cool, crisp air, fresh apple cider, my birthday (October 28th), and my favorite holidays (Halloween and Thanksgiving) all make this a great time of year. But the best part about the fall? NEW TV SHOWS!

This fall features a great mix of new shows and returning favorites. It seemed like last fall, all the good shows were on Mondays and Thursdays, with very little in between. The cold open from last weekend’s season finale of Saturday Night Live about Dominique Strauss-Kahn is a perfect example of the type of humor that appeals to me.

As a Model United Nations/European Union sim geek in high school and college, I totally get the jokes. Even if you don’t understand what Jay Pharaoh and Kenan Thompson’s characters are talking about, obviously the juxtaposition itself is funny. Taran Killam’s facial expressions are priceless.

I especially love the punchline at the end, given the nature of Strauss-Kahn’s alleged crimes.

My current nerd obsession revolves around George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire book series and the current HBO miniseries adaptation of the first novel, Game of Thrones. Even for an obsessive geek-type such as myself, I amazed at how quickly I have become engrossed in the world of Westeros and the lands across the Narrow Sea. I’ve been reading the books voraciously and I’ve watched every episode of the series so far. I downloaded the House Stark sigil wallpaper from the HBO site, which I think looks pretty spiffy on my Ubuntu laptop. I follow the HBO Game of Thrones accounts on Facebook and Twitter. The GoT Twitter account even sent me a kind, albeit cryptic, welcome message: “Thanks for following. Don’t forgot – crowns do queer things to the heads beneath them.”

On Monday night, the Stargate went dark for the final time. The last episode of Stargate Universe aired on SyFy, after the cable network and franchise-owner MGM announced that there would be no more trips through the ‘Gate.
